Trail of the Catwoman is a Catwoman storyline written by Ed Brubaker with illustrations by Darwyn Cooke and Cameron Stewart. It's a back-up feature in Detective Comics, published following the end of the Catwoman series. Brubaker goes on to write the graphic novel Selina's Big Score, leading into Anodyne in his Catwoman series. The story deals with Slam Bradley tracking down Selina Kyle following her disappearance.

Synopsis

Mayor Dickerson hires Slam Bradley to find Catwoman, who the police believe is dead. There are almost no records available, but Bradley tracks down an old fence and beats information out of him. His one lead is that Catwoman is known to have murdered a woman named Selina Kyle.[1] Bradley exhumes her coffin, and they find a faceless corpse. Since Kyle ran for Mayor of New York City, Slam continues his investigation there. His newspaper buddies give him Kyle's life story. The mob abducts Bradley, and a thug named Gino beats him up. They previously paid Catwoman a large sum of money to have Kyle killed, and they offer to pay him for information if she's still alive. Slam looks at Selina's files, and realizes that she must have been Catwoman.[2] He questions Selina's ex-boyfriend Bruce Wayne about her disappearance, and Wayne angrily throws him out of his office. Batman later interrogates Slam, and tells him to stop investigating Catwoman. When he gets back to his office, he finds Selina Kyle waiting for him.[3] Selina explains that after what she went through in the last year, she needed time to find herself. Both of her identities caused her too much pain, so she burned them. Selina asks Bradley to stop digging into her, and he agrees. Batman hears her confession, and waits until Bradley leaves so he can offer his support. Bradley tells the Mayor he quits, and Dickerson has him beaten up by cops. He accepts his beating, believing that it's worth it so Selina can have a chance. In the aftermath, Gino pays a visit to Slam, and this time Slam beats the tar out of him.[4]
