Synopsis for "Origins"

There is the tale of a woman on Czarnia in Universe 2. Living on the lower levels, she needed expensive medicine for her parents, who were suffering in a plague ravaging the lower class. On the advice of her friend Lobo, she tried to rob the medicine, but she was caught and imprisoned. While in prison, she received a message from Lobo that her parents had died but that he had taken care of their funeral arrangements. After that, she was approached by a government agent who told her that she was immune to the plague but was a carrier, and that the guards who had tortured her had all died of it, along with their families. The agent explained that the plague had been sent by Darkseid, and offered a deal: if she carried a revenge plague to Apokolips, her family would receive the medicine and be cured. Aware of the lie but wanting to hurt someone, the woman agreed, and endured a month of pain as she was subjected to the worst diseases on the planet. Arriving on Apokolips as the Czarnian ambassador, she staggered, accidentally killing the guards with her toxic sweat. But her counterpart, DeSaad, was immune, and told her that the Czarnian rulers had killed their entire underclass, calling them "Plague Dogs", to stop the spread of the plague. He offered her revenge if she would serve Apokolips. She agreed, and so she became the Fury of Pestilence.

There is a tale of a woman on Warworld in Universe 2. The champion of the arena, she was undefeatable, the loyal slave of Mongul. At a formal dinner with a visitor from Apokolips, Steppenwolf, the question of what is best in life came up. Mongul responded that it was to have your will achieved. but the champion said that what was best in life was... life. Knowing that you had the ability to sate your hungers by working your will upon the world, knowing that with power you can make your hunger paramount to all others. Steppenwolf told her that one day she would be dead, but that the servants of Apokolips need never die, and if she betrayed her master, she could become a Fury. Steppenwolf warned her not to, but she took a massive bit of his arm. He ordered her to leave, and she followed Steppenwolf, to be the Fury of Famine.

There is a tale of a girl on a Tamaranean spaceship from Universe 2. It crashed in Armaghetto, and Barda & Kazana, two junior members of Darkseid's forces, found the lone survivor, a girl named K'li, surrounded by corpses. They trained her with a class of other girls, where she made friends with a girl named Eila. Some of the other girls died at K'li's hands in training accident, but Eila and K'li grew up and graduated, and were presented to Darkseid. As a proof of devotion to her king, K'li killed Eila, and then killed Kazana when she tried to stop her. She said that she had loved them, and that she could love no-one but Darkseid. Impressed, Darkseid made her his Fury of War.

There is a tale of a woman on Mars in Universe 2. A healer among her green people, she brought life and love wherever she went, especially into her home, where she raised her young daughter. But the forces of Apokolips came for them, choking the rivers with the dead, and bringing so much slaughter that they turned the planet red. The healer did not die, though hunger and violence stalked her friends, her countrymen, her child. She was caught for the final extermination, but as she was marched passed Darkseid, he saw something in her. He called her to him, and said that she had a power of life in her, and if she would serve him, he would marry their two desires: his desire for a servant to lay waste to worlds, and her desire for a child. In her heartbreak and her last resolve, she consented, laying down with Darkseid, and rising as his Fury of Death.

The forces of Apokolips are not stupid. They will strike at their enemies through what they care for most, perverting good desires and co-opting base ones. Any world they encounter has no hope except battle and the mercy of its gods.
