Synopsis for "Upper Hand"

In Atlanta, Travis Clevenger is set to be transfered from the hospital to prison while being watched by one of Luis Salvador henchman.

Back in Detroit, Jason Rusch learns that the tuition fees for the university he is aiming for has raised and he cannot afford it anymore. His father then yells at him for being sad about that as he reveals that he is broke and might lose the house. Suddenly a noise in the building corridor draws Jason's dad outside the flat where he is hit by Luis Salvador and three of his henchmen, soon followed by Jason who is knocked out as well.

In another building, Jason and his dad are tied up and Jason is questionned and beaten up by Salvador to know more about the superhero who disturbed his traffic in the region. He proceed to remove Jason's blindfold so that he can watch his dad suffer but by doing so allows Jason to iniate a merge with him and becomes Firestorm. This merger gets quickly out of hand as Salvador takes the upper hand and gets control of Firestorm. He then flies to attack the police truck used to transfer Travis Clevenger and destroys it.

Bloodhound being freed, a fight between the two starts while Jason tries to regain control. The combined attack helps Jason revoke the merger. Bloodhoung then takes Jason with him while Salvador is found by his team and promises vengeance.

  • Alvin Rusch learns that Jason is Firestorm in this issue.
  • This issue establishes that Jason needs to make eye contact with another person in order to prompt the transformation into Firestorm. Previous incarnations of the character could change into Firestorm at will.
