Iris West is a journalist in Central City, as well as the best friend and later wife of Barry Allen, also known as the Flash. She is also a secondary leader of Team Flash and the boss of newspaper The Central City Citizen.

Origins

Iris is the daughter of Joe and Francine West. When she was a child, Francine abandoned her family, making Iris grow up with Joe alone. Iris met Barry Allen when his mother was murdered by a "man in yellow" and Joe adopted him to live with them. Years later, Barry was struck by lightning and fell into a coma; Iris was going to visit him every day. In the meantime, Iris started dating police detective Eddie Thawne, who was her father's partner. When Barry woke up, metahumans started to appear in the city, including Flash, which Iris would later discover was Barry.

2049 Timeline

The Original Timeline

At some point before 2024, Iris and Barry had a daughter, Nora, who inherited the same powers of Barry, and S.T.A.R. Labs was converted into the Flash Museum to honor the Flash's deeds. According to Eobard Thawne, Nora's name was Dawn in the original timeline, before he killed her grandmother Nora Allen.[3]

In 2024, the Crisis on Infinite Earths happened, and the Flash and several other heroes faced the Reverse-Flash and his army of Shadow Demons, while the skies turned red in all of the reality. In the end, the Flash and Reverse-Flash vanished in a flash of light and Green Arrow died in battle.

After this, Iris wrote an article at Central City Citizen about the Crisis and implanted a power-dampening chip into Nora's neck, in order to depower her as she was hurt by Barry's loss and afraid of the possibility of Nora following his father's superhero career. When Nora discovered this, she became against Iris, as she blamed her for lying to her for most of her life about his father and her powers. Estranging from her mother, Nora traveled to 2018 and became a superheroine called XS. Eventually, this timeline was erased when Thawne freed himself and ran to the past.[4][5][6]

New Timeline In the new timeline, Barry survived the Crisis, so the past events of the 2040s never hapened.[7]

  • Speed Force Conduit: Speed force conduits possess a connection to the Speed Force, a cosmic force that allows its users to push the boundaries that keep time and space. As a conduit of the Speed Force, all aspects of their physiology are accelerated and enhanced.[8]
    • Accelerated Healing: By having a connection to the speed force, every speed force conduit has an incredibly fast healing ability and can heal from most injuries in seconds and devastating injuries in minutes.[9]
    • Enhanced Senses: The Speed Force enhances the speedster's senses, allowing them to perceive and process thoughts faster than the normal person.[10]
    • Phasing: Speed Force conduits can tap into the Speed Force to vibrate their molecules in a way to achieve intangibility for short bursts, allowing them to phase through objects.[11]
    • Speed Force Aura: The Speed Force manifests an aura around the speedster and whatever they are carrying, protecting them from adverse effects of their speed, such as friction with the air.[12]
      • Superhuman Durability: The Speed Force Aura also protects speedsters from kinetic impacts, which in turn, makes them much more durable and resistant to injury than any normal human.[13]
    • Superhuman Stamina: The Speed Force grants its conduits with a great increase of stamina, allowing them to fight or run much longer than the average person. Although a great increase, it is not unlimited.[10]
    • Superhuman Speed: The universal factor of being a Speed Force conduit grants its user with imperceptible amounts of speed. All powers that conduits possess derives from their speed.[10]. This also confers:
      • Superhuman Agility: The speedster's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to superhuman levels. This allows them to easily maneuver while moving at superhuman speed.[10]
      • Superhuman Reflexes: In conjunction with their enhanced senses, The speedster's reflexes are heightened immesurably, allowing them to dodge or react faster than normal.[10]
    • Vortex Creations: Speed Force conduits are able to create vortices of air by running in circles or rotating their extremities at super-speed. These vortices can be used for a number of effects.[14]
