Synopsis for "Case of the Ancient Clues"

This story is reprinted from Police Comics #75.

When the old interstate bridge is torn down to make way for a new one, the crew finds a dead body hidden inside the structure. Because the bridge was built 20 years ago, and the victim wasn't just stabbed but burnt to hide evidence, there's no clues except the queer ritual dagger that was presumably the murder weapon but also a strange ring. Plastic Man recognizes its stone as chalchuite, a stone that's only ever been valued by ancient indigenous Mexicans. When all of the 20-year-old disappearances on the books turn out to be accounted for, Plas and Woozy investigate the Society of Ancient Aztecs to see if that turns up any leads.

Indeed it does, as the high priest recognizes the ring immediately as a sacred artifact, and sends his muscular henchman Oxtlatl after the investigators for defiling it. They escape and split up, with Woozy carrying the ring and even trying to get it appraised, but Oxtlatl captures him and brings him back to be used as a human sacrifice. The priest tells Woozy how the murder victim they found was a lowly servant who stole the scared ring and tried to use it to pass himself off as a prince. He paid with his blood, just as Woozy will pay with his. Plas slinks into the basement where the cultists imprison Woozy as they wait for the moon to reach its Zenith. He borrows Woozy's clothes to infiltrate the sacrificial ritual and sends his friend to get the cops. Instead, Woozy's arrested for ranting about Mexican murder cults in naught but his undies.

The sacrifice commences, but Plas easily handles the cultists in the ensuing brawl, even destroying their idol by throwing Oxtlatl into it headfirst. After finding out the place really isn't surrounded by cops, Plas has to call them on a telephone he notes seems out of place in this hall of ancient terrors.
