Synopsis for "The Cross Country Crimes!"

This story is reprinted from Batman #8.

Batman is summoned to Washington by the FBI chief, G. Henry Mover. He and Robin go there in the Batmobile, in daytime, and there's a parade in their honor. Mover congratulates Batman on his successful struggle against crime, when the Joker appears on a nearby rooftop and shoots the FBI agent. He was aiming at Batman, but missed. Mover survives, and declares the Joker to be Public Enemy No. 1.

Batman and Robin then pursue the Joker across the country, with the Joker leaving cryptic little clues the whole way. Also in Ohio, he kills one gang of his own thugs with joker-venom-treated cigars, then kills a whole busload of jewelers by repainting a highway stripe, sending the bus off a roadside cliff.

Joker's murders and robberies follow a pattern, which spells out J.O.K.E.R. Batman sees the pattern and is able to predict where Joker will strike next. He plans a trap for his nemesis, and finally, after a titanic struggle, captures his old foe, sending him to Alcatraz.

When the Joker and Catwoman begin to dominate the headlines, the Penguin committs another series of spectacular crimes to overshadow them. However, even though his crimes are inspired by rare birds, the clues lead Batman and Robin to capturing the Penguin once more.

The Scarecrow

Jonathan Crane was a disturbed kid who liked to scare birds away. Nowadays, he is a professor of psychology at the Gotham University, but his methods are a bit rough and unnecessary. His colleagues often mocked him because he resembled a scarecrow due to his thin complexion and his old clothes. Crane used his earnings to buy more books, but after listening to his peers mocking him, he decided to deliver fear in exchange of money. In this way, Jonathan Crane becomes the Scarecrow and starts terrorizing the enemies of wealthy men for money.

During one of his terrorizing acts, the Scarecrow was spotted by Batman and Robin, who start chasing him but his thin complexion allows Scarecrow to escape.

Some weeks later the crimes of the Scarecrow become known to everyone in the city. However, due to Crane's reckless activities as a professor, he is fired from the university, but he doesn't really care enough since he as a new way of making the money he needs to buy more books. When Bruce Wayne visits the president of the college, he learns that a professor known as Jonathan "Scarecrow" Crane has been fired and Bruce thinks that he might have a connection with the new criminal.

Later, the police spot Scarecrow again and the dynamic duo get going to stop him. Batman and Robin find the Scarecrow, but they're unable to stop him. However, using his hunch as a lead, Batman disguises as an old man and goes to Crane's house, asking for a phone. After using the phone and getting out of Crane's home, he is sure that Crane is Scarecrow. Batman and Robin wait outside Crane's home to ambush him and when he comes out as Scarecrow, a fight between the three of them start. Scarecrow runs into a child's playground and the dynamic duo follow him. After a long struggle, Batman and Robin are finally able to stop the Scarecrow and the criminal is sent to jail.

Synopsis for "The Lady Rogues!"

This story is reprinted from Batman #45.

A famous author has recently published a book about the most evil women in history and a Hollywood studio has bought the rights to make a movie based on the book. At the same time, Catwoman escapes from prison and when she learns that she wasn't included in the book, she decides to sabotage the film and steal from the crew and the studio. Catwoman's criminal spree is successful until she is captured and arrested by Batman and Robin. Once again in prison, Catwoman is visited by the famous author, who reveals to her that he was writting an entire book about her.
