Lionel Luthor (or sometimes Jules Luthor) is the father of Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor. He also was married to Lillian Luthor and has a daughter named Lena Luthor (and sometimes other children too). There have been several origins depicting him differently, although he is consistently seen as an abusive parent. On Earth-One, he changed the family name to Thorul after Lex turned to crime. On New Earth, Lex is shown to have murdered his father at a young age to collect on the life insurance policy.
Lex Luthor's father was created by Jerry Siegel and Kurt Schaffenberger, first appearing as Jules Thorul in Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #23 (1961). Lionel Luthor was created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, first appearing in the Smallville episode Pilot (2001).
