The Skull was an enemy of Darrel Dane.
History
Ferguson was a supervisor at an atomic testing plant. He was also a spy, in the service of America's enemies. By disguising himself as the Skull, he hoped to steal a secret formula from Darrel Dane and gain access to a shipment of Thorium.
As Darrel and his fiancee, Martha Roberts, were crossing the country by train, the Skull confronted them in the cargo area. During the struggle, both Darrel and Martha were knocked out. When they regained consciousness, Martha continued to feel "terribly dizzy," and realized by concentrating on her will power, she was able to condense her molecules — becoming Doll Girl.
Now, with two heroes in search of the Skull, he was easily apprehended and paid the penalty for his treachery.

- This version of the Skull, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023.
