Synopsis for "The New Deadwardians, Part 7"
The gathering of Bright protesters outside the Old Crown pub in Zone-B manage to grab hold of Chief Inspector George Suttle, who had been in pursuit of a Mr. Salt. Unfortunately, the fact that George is one of the Young has made him a target, and with several men subduing him, they prepare to stake him through the heart. With his adrenaline rising, George feels allows himself to use the superhuman strength that the Cure afforded him. As he hadn't when he fought in the war, George now derives no pleasure from using his inhuman physiology to knock the Brights aside.
After clearing a path through the protesters, George spots Mr. Salt escaping, and gives chase again. When his pursuit is obstructed by a horse and carriage, George uses his physiology to leap over the whole thing, and knock Salt to the ground. Angrily, he presses the man against a wall, demanding answers as to who killed Hinchcliffe. Strangely, Salt claims that George ought to know, because he was there. He claims that, somehow, George has erased his own memory of things - that he is the artist Pretendleby. That he has been killing members of the Sons of Adam as vengeance for making him reinvent the world. He suggests that George left his own back door open in order to let the Restless into his house and attack his staff. He would investigate his own crime in order to cover it up.
George is overwhelmed, and collapses. He does not regain awareness until Constable Bowes appears to warn him that there is a riot brewing in Zone-B, thanks to his attacks on the protesters. George leaves Bowes to contain the riots, and walks home to Zone-A. On the way home, he stops in a church, and speaks with the priest there. The priest remarks that it seems to be belief that determines whether a member of the young is affected by the church. However, lately, belief and identity have become confused. Especially so, in George, who is no longer sure who he is. George asks the priest if he believes that the Restless plague was part of God's plan, and the priest replies that he must believe that, otherwise, it is one of the gravest man-made crimes ever. George comments that he will not wait for God to punish whoever was responsible.
At home. George begins writing a letter of confession to Superintendent Carstairs when he is interrupted by his maid Louisa. Regretfully, she confesses that it was she who left the back door open, because she had been feeding a stray cat, and simply forgot. Realizing that he was tricked, George tears up the note and grabs his pistol. Bowes appears to inform him that the riots have got out of control, causing a major Zone-B incursion, with Restless in the Bright quarters. Hearing this, George retrieves his sword from his old war chest, and orders Louisa to bar the doors.
While he helps fight off the Restless, George intends to pay Mr. Salt a second visit, and this time, he will not be fooled so easily.
