Synopsis for "Sacrifice of the Gods"

The corruption of the Source unleashes a series of disasters in every corner of the Earth. A thunderstorm and an earthquake hit Metropolis, but Superman can't protect the city alone. Suddenly, Superman hears the voice of Highfather, summoning him to New Genesis, the origin of the crisis. Superman is reluctant about leaving his city unprotected, but he accepts Highfather's summons.

Superman is surprised to find Darkseid on New Genesis, especially working along Highfather. The New Gods brief Superman on the origin of the corruption and the awakening of the Shadow Element S'ivaa, who threatens to destroy the cosmos. Only one thing can stop S'ivaa: Highfather and Darkseid must sacrifice themselves and give in to the Source.

Izaya sends Superman to the Eternal Sea to join Orion in the battle against S'ivaa. But even their combined strength isn't enough to contain the Shadow Elemental, who starts to rip the fabric of the cosmos. Through one of those rips, Superman can see miniature worlds burning due to S'ivaa's rampage. According to Orion, those are worlds from the mortal universe that burn because they can't exist on New Genesis' plain of existence. Together, Superman and Orion seal the breaches.

While Orion and Superman struggle to contain the beast, Highfather and Darkseid travel to the Source Wall. Both gods prepare to meld with the Source, but Darkseid betrays Izaya and steps out, leaving Darkseid to inherit the entire cosmos.

Trivia

• This issue reveals that the New Gods are giants compared to the mortal universe, but traveling through a Boom Tube adjusts their size to their destination. So even though Superman and Orion look the same size, Superman and any other mortal is "nothing more than a speck in an air pocket" compared to the real size of a New God.
