New Tortuga is asteroid colony settled by Space Pirates as their base of operation.
History
Named after the Haitian island on Earth which in the past was home to Pirates. This asteroid is a base for many of the galaxy's space pirates, earning it the name "the Pirate Planetoid". New Tortuga follows in the shadow of a gas giant which is in orbit around an orange star. The space pirates control the planetoid with a rule of terror. This is the home of most of the scum and villainy that exists in the United Planets. The Legion of Super-Heroes became a major thorn in the sides of space pirates. The leader of the Space-Pirate Pack staged a contest to see who would infiltrate the Legion, to detroy them. Dynamo Boy won the contest, and used a special belt to simulate energy-powers. His plan failed and the Legion continue to be a thorn in the pirates side.[1][2]
Some years later, the Legion encountered a group of exceptionally dangerous pirates led by Captain Frake and repelled their attempted raid on U.P. shipping vessels. Unbeknownst to all but Saturn Girl, an amnesiac Ultra Boy was among the pirate crew and contributed significantly to the Legionnaires' defeat.[3] Lightning Lad and Wildfire tracked the pirate ship Antares down to New Tortuga and raided the asteroid to shut down pirate operations, but it was the seeming sacrifice of Ultra Boy himself (who had revolted against the pirates due to resurfacing moral qualms about their activities) that destroyed the pirates' ultimate weapon and base.[4]
