Raymond Deming was the father of Starman (Will Payton).
History
Raymond Deming always had trouble keeping a job. He married young to Marie Payton and his lack of stability was always a source of tension in the marriage. That didn't prevent him from becoming a father to Starman (Will Payton) and Jayne Payton. When his kids were young, he went out for cigarettes and never came back.
Raymond sank into the life of a drifter, abusing tobacco and alcohol and failing to hold a job for long. He eventually settled in San Francisco. Twenty years after he abandoned his family, Raymond was involved in an accident. He saved a young boy from an oncoming truck but was hit by the truck himself. His injuries were serious enough, Raymond fell into a coma. Will saw news about the accident and went to San Francisco to see his father. Raymond came out of the coma long enough to talk with both Will and Jayne. Though he died shortly after, the conversation was enough to bring some peace to Will about their relationship.[1]
