Samuel Wilson was one of the Texas Rangers and lived during the mid to latter half of the 19th Century.

His wife Maria, was gunned down by an outlaw, and Sam pledged his life towards bringing her killer to justice. Sam's young son Rick wanted to be in his father's footsteps, but Sam always warned him that wearing a tin badge succeeds only in making you a target. Regardless, Sam taught his son how to shoot and the boy practiced until he was nearly his father's equal. By his own admission, Sam Wilson was the finest shot out of all of the Texas Rangers. When Rick was still a child, Sam Wilson saved the life of a young Mexican woman named Paloma from a group of outlaws. Sam was injured during the fight, but soon recovered. Although he saved Paloma, he could not save her family. He brought her to the Brown family to be raised, but Paloma ran back to the Wilson homestead, preferring instead to live with them. Sam adopted Paloma as his own daughter, and raised her alongside Rick.

By the time Rick was an adult, Sam Wilson worked as a Federal Marshall. Rick insisted that his father let him join the Texas Rangers, but Sam couldn't bring himself to give his blessing. Angered, Rick left home to forge his own destiny. A year later, Sam discovered that Rick was now living the life of an outlaw. After a debacle involving the Fenton Gang, Sam and Rick faced each other in the streets of Copper Creek, Texas. Rick outdrew his father, shooting him in the shoulder. From that day onward, Sam Wilson disowned his son, declaring that he was nothing more than a common outlaw. He placed Wanted posters all over the territory and swore that he would bring his son to justice.
