Synopsis for "Memoria Roja"

Three days ago, Shade was visiting his great-grandson Darnell Caldecott in Australia. He had come to discover why Darnell had hired men to attack him and steal samples of his blood - a fluid which has not run in Shade's veins for some time. Rather than use that blood to gain immortality somehow, Darnell welcomed death - but only after prolonging his life long enough to answer some lingering questions. For example, who within their family might be using the company's resources for nefarious intent?

In pursuit of discovering the answer to that question, Shade has come to Spain, where he encounters the vigilante La Sangre - a woman and a vampire. She has been accumulating a collection of celebrity blood samples for some time, and he hopes that she might have one of his. Though she has only just finished undoing a number of art-thieves, she believes she might have a vial of it, somewhere.

At her modern apartment, Shade and Sangre catch a news broadcast in which it becomes increasingly obvious that the people of Barcelona are quite happy to have a vigilante watching over them - even if she is a vampire. Unfortunately, though, a villain known as the Inquisitor has returned. Though he fancies himself a vigilante as well, his brand of justice would see a thief face the same punishment as a rapist: death. As such, he sees La Sangre as an abomination, and for decades, he has dogged her.

He has sent a video message to accompany his return, in which he condemns those who participate in Barcelona's Fashion Week, whom he plans to disfigure within the day if La Sangre does not come before him and kill herself. As an incentive, he has already killed a model, and peeled the skin from her face, which he holds up as a trophy for the camera. Shade insists on helping La Sangre kill him.

Shade had met La Sangre back in 1854, when he still had blood running through his veins - this would soon change. He had been on a ship bound for Africa when it was boarded forcibly by pirates. Those pirates, though, were also vampires. Though he cared little for the lives of those on board who were killed, when one pirate began to feed on a newborn infant, he would not stand for it. He staked every one of them through the heart, and took the baby into his arms. Unsure of how to act, he tried to suck the vampire's curse out through the baby's wound. Though the child woke, it had been turned.

After 15 years, the girl that baby had grown into stopped aging, a possible result of Shade's intervention. Another result of that intervention was that Shade's human blood was replaced by the blackness - perhaps an effect of the vampires' poison. At the time, the change had mattered little to him, but now it is of great importance. Still, the blood will have to wait until the Inquisitor is dealt with.
