Detective Steven "Shotgun" Smith was a member of the Gotham City Police Department, known as the toughest cop in Gotham and certainly had a no-nonsense attitude.

However, his methods were always too extreme and Commissioner Gordon asked Batman to keep a close eye on Smith. At that time, Smith was trying to round up a large drug cartel by pretending to deal with them and Batman assumed that Smith was in fact crooked. This misunderstanding was eventually cleared, when Batman saved Smith's daughter, Maryanne from the drug dealers and together, Batman and Shotgun captured the crooks.[1]

Some time later, Smith was accused of corruption and had to leave the force after only one man, Commissioner James Gordon, spoke up in his defense. Although Smith remained bitter towards the Police Department, he remained in law enforcement, becoming a County Sheriff.

Smith – then a Sheriff's Deputy – first encountered Robin when he mistook the young hero for a member of the Speedboyz and used his unmarked patrol car to ram the Redbird off the road.[2] In his later capacity as Sheriff, Smith and his deputy, Cissy Chambers, encountered Robin a number of times, coming to respect the young man's abilities.

Abilities

Transportation

  • Unmarked Police Car: Smith is seen to drive an unmarked dark blue patrol car with bull-bars mounted on the front, which he uses to ram the Redbird.

Weapons

  • Double-Barreled Shotgun: Smith's weapon of choice is a handheld double-barrelled shotgun, which is how he got his nickname.

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
