The Spawn of Frankenstein was a menace tracked by Doctor Thirteen and Phantom Stranger.

History

Composed of stitched-together corpses by Dr. Victor von Frankenstein, the monster known as the Spawn of Frankenstein (or sometimes just Frankenstein) turned against its creator but Doctor von Frankenstein tracked it as far as the Arctic, where it seemingly perished.

In 1942, Kalla of the Dzyan crossed paths with the Spawn of Frankenstein in the Arctic. It revealed to her that it had lived there since 1797. At that time, it preferred to be known as Victor Frankenstein II.

Decades later, the monster was resurrected by Doctor Victor Adams, though he killed himself in the process and caused Marie Thirteen to be injured and comatose. As the room collapses around them, the monster supports the ceiling so her husband, Doctor Thirteen, and Victor's widow Rachael can escape with Marie's unconscious form. Two days after these events, Victor is buried and the monster stops grave robbers from desecrating his grave. The following day, Rachael Adams is kidnapped from her husband's graveside by satanists who plan to use her soul as a gate to hell. The monster, who has dug up Victor Adams in order to resurrect him, saves her from this fate. Exiting the old mansion, the monster is possessed by two demons, Flagermot and Pornipus, who force him to kidnap Marie Thirteen from the hospital. This brings him into conflict with Doctor Thirteen, who teams with the Phantom Stranger to track him down. The demons are eventually destroyed, though Doctor Thirteen still does not believe in the supernatural. Wandering off, the monster runs afoul of a snake cult, whom he disperses, but is still run off by the townsfolk.

Some years later, a spectral version of the monster was summoned by the ghost of Jeremiah Odets, a printer's apprentice who died the night the first edition of the Daily Planet was published.

• Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
• The Spawn of Frankenstein did survive the Crisis, as shown by his appearances in Young All-Stars #18–19. However, he was later seemingly replaced in continuity by Frankenstein. This is presumably a consequence of the reality-altering Zero Hour. It is unclear whether any of the Spawn of Frankenstein's adventures still happened, but enacted by Frankenstein instead.
