Val-El was a native of the planet Krypton and a respected member of the House of El.
History
He was known as a great explorer responsible for discovering lands that would later become known as Bokos, Vathlo and Lurvan.
The tablet written by Bur-El taught Val how to build a compass, which he used at the helm of the sailing ship 1-Val. Val-El and his brother Tro-El were the first from Erkol to set foot on Vathlo where they befriended the native population and replenished their supplies.
Once again asea after Vathlo, Val-El takes part in the rescue of sailers from the 3-Van, which is smashed by a Pryllgu.
A statue of Val-El holding a ship's wheel was erected and placed within the House of El family memorial vault on the planet Krypton. The statues were blasted away and turned to Kryptonite in the final catastrophe, before being plated with lead by Superboy and transferred to Rokyn.

- This version of Val-El, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
