History

New Earth

Gotham Village is considered a quiet neighborhood, with a rather low crime rate compared to the rest of Gotham City. It had some flare-ups of criminal activity tied to the Geo Populus cult, but after Tom Kirk and Simon Dark destroyed the cult, the neighborhood returned to its quiet normalcy. The neighborhood has a higher proportion of undead and other mystical figures than is the norm for the city with Simon Dark, who has claimed the residents as his protectorate, as the most odd and prominent of the lot.

Earth-One

At one point, there was a movement that proposed the reconstruction of the site as it had been overloaded with crime, but it was opposed by those who believed in the preservation of such historical places. The dispute was solved after Batman captured a large gang that operated underneath Gotham Village and arrested their main leader, Roland Meacham, also known as The Smiler.[1]
