Synopsis for "Strung Along"

At Shadowcrest, Zatanna and Oscar Hampel arrive at John Zatara's old sanctuary, hoping to find a way to return Hampel to human form. Amazed at how many artifacts Zatanna possesses, Hampel asks her why does her family pretend to be stage magicians when they can take over the world. Zatanna replies that the homo magi, her ancestral species, is aware of what could happen is magic is not used properly.

Meanwhile, Dale Colton is called to the San Quentin Prison, as the warden requested his help in dealing with Brother Night, who has been causing trouble in the prison. Dale finds Night at the infirmary, levitating several surgery instruments. Night cuts Dale's cheek with a knife, revealing that he has fully regained consciousness.

At Shadowcrest, Zatanna finds a relic called the Soul Crystal and makes Hampel touch it. The crystal functions as an extension of karma and reveals the true identity and intentions of whoever touches it. Apparently, Hampel once worked as an assistant of the Rossises, a family team of puppet artists. The Rossises were going through economic difficulties, as the puppet artists of that time only earned money on TV, but the Rossises refused to change their format. Hampel set their house on fire, killing them and stealing their puppets. Changing their act's name to "Oscar Hampel and the Merry-o-nettes", Hampel became a successful entertainer. Also, the man in Boston never tried to kill Hampel. In fact, Hampel was trying to break into his safe box to take all of his money, and when the man came in, he killed him and was planning to do the same to a young Zatanna.

Zatanna realizes his father was right in turning Hampel into a puppet and tries to stop him, but Hampel grabs some magic relics, trying to become human again. Suddenly, the relics begin restoring Hampel's human form, but they also begin to warp reality. Zatanna tries to contain the magic, but Hampel refuses to become a puppet again. Then, they are both consumed in a white explosion.

Afterwards, Hampel has regained his human form and restored his old fame. During a show, he reveals his new puppet: Zatanna.
