Synopsis: The Five-Year War is an event that took place in a parallel dimension commonly referred to as Old Earth. On October 18th, 1998 foreign agents launched a powerful "meteor" weapon at Earth's lunar colony. 75% of the people stationed at the colony were automatically killed in the devastation while only a small handful managed to survive trapped underground.

NASA command at Cape Canaveral sent astronaut Martin Champion on a rescue mission to find the ten missing colonists. Along the way, he met Space Station One crew chief Lydia Perez who aided him in bringing the surviving colonists back home.

The political fallout of the attack proved so devastating that the nations of Earth dissolved diplomatic relations in favor of stringent isolationism. In the wake of the war, this dissolution became known as the Break-Up. Teams of scientists left over from NASA relocated to the western district of Northcal to establish a new scientific research center known as the Atari Institute.
