Frederick Rhino was a loyal, though dimwitted leg-breaker who found employment working for the Ventriloquist.

Scarface Enforcer

Rhino was a convicted prisoner doing time in Blackgate Penitentiary when he first came across the Ventriloquist and Scarface. The weak Ventriloquist got in many fights with the other inmates because his Scarface persona wouldn't keep his mouth shut. Rhino was impressed by the Ventriloquist and Scarface's harsh attitude and decided to help them against the other violent inmates. Since that moment, Rhino became the enforcer for Scarface, acting on his behalf whenever any physical confrontation was required.[1]

Eventually, the Ventriloquist and Scarface escaped from Blackgate and Rhino soon followed them and started working as the bouncer at the Ventriloquist Club on Gotham's Electric Street.[2] However, Rhino's primary duty was as an enforcer for Scarface. In this position, Rhino clashed with Batman; who captured the Ventriloquist and sent him back to prison.[3]

Not long afterwards, the Ventriloquist was released and he was joined once again by Rhino; with whom Scarface sought to rebuild his criminal empire. However, the Ventriloquist Club had been condemned and their drug empire had been taken over by the Street Demonz. Rhino proved vital in Scarface's comeback and reclamation of his lost criminal business.[4][5]

The Ventriloquist Club was reopened soon after and Wesker attempted his most audacious scheme yet. He and Rhino broke the Joker out of Arkham Asylum, intent on forcing the Clown Prince of Crime to reveal where he had stashed twenty-five million in loot after a robbery. The plan didn't work out and in the end, the Ventriloquist was captured and his operations were closed.[6]

The Downfall of Scarface

During the massive breakout from Arkham Asylum; Wesker escaped and went looking for Scarface. By the time he reunited with Rhino, Scarface's territory had once again been seized by others and Scarface set out to reclaim his drug empire. However, Wesker was captured by Batman and Robin, but Rhino escaped with Scarface to a secret vault set up for emergencies; in which he found only a book titled "How To Throw Your Voice."[7]

After a long and hard training, Rhino learned to throw his voice and provide Scarface with a voice in order to come up with a plan to break the Ventriloquist out of Arkham. Rhino succeeded and then followed the Ventriloquist and Scarface in their most deranged plan yet: to kill a bird.[8] Their rather harmless plan was foiled by Batman, although it was completely accidental. Rhino confronted Batman once again and lost as usual, but the Ventriloquist and Scarface escaped swimming away to the open sea.[9]

No Man's Land

In the wake of the Gotham earthquake, Rhino escaped from Blackgate and laid low in the weeks that followed, missing out on the Ventriloquist's attempt at extorting money from the city as the Quakemaster. Wesker was confined to Arkham, but soon he was released along with the other prisoners in the newly declared "No Man's Land".[10]

Eventually, Rhino and Wesker were reunited and Scarface carved out his own territory in Gotham City, which he controlled for three months until Batman returned. Batman took the Ventriloquist down and freed the area from their control, only to find the residents in a state of panic that their rations would be cut off. The Dark Knight soon realized that the few people that remained in Gotham needed protection and he got Rhino and the rest of Scarface's men to provide food and protect the citizens.[11]

However, Rhino's position as an agent of Batman didn't last long and he quickly joined other criminal overlords of No Man's Land. As such, Rhino was used as bait in a scheme of the Penguin and Two-Face to temporarily remove the threat of Batman. The trap consisted of luring Batman away from his territory and to get his attention, the criminals got Rhino to pretend he was trying to kill a woman accused of stealing food. When Batman attempted to stop Rhino, he was attacked and swiftly defeated by the woman, actually a Russian metahuman known as Echo.[12]
