History

The Ultra-Humanite was once a sickly child named Gerard Shugel. Though cursed with a failing body, his mind was brilliant and he eventually grew up to become a respected research scientist. His colleagues however, did not approve of Gerard's methods, particularly his numerous experiments involving animals. The only one who stood by his side was a woman named Satana. Gerard was eventually let go and Satana and he traveled to Africa to continue their experiments. He eventually perfected the process by which to conduct a successful brain transplant and Satana moved Gerard's brain from his meak body into that of a massive, white gorilla. Satana assured him that the surrogate body was only temporary, but Gerard relished the feeling of the power that was now available to him. [1]

Unfortunately, while his mind's energies continued to develop and expand, even developing low level mind energy techniques such as telepathy, his physical brain interface never advanced. Unable to contain the mental energies, his body began slowly burning out. Unable to halt the degradation, the Ultra-Humanite developed a surgical process that allowed him to transfer his original brain into a new body while he sought out a technique to stabilize his ever increasing mind.

It is in the body of actress Dolores Winters that the Ultra-Humanite commits many of his early crimes. The Ultra-Humanite selected Dolores Winters' body as most male police would not suspect a woman, let alone a recognized public figure, to be an active criminal mastermind. The Ultra-Humanite continues to use Winters' body as his base until he is forced to seek out the next victim to house his super-powered brain.

After a period of time, he began to adjust to the idea of having to kill others in order to continue his existence. However, his human body's endurance time became less and less as his mind-energy generation continued to advance, burning out the bodies in ever faster speeds. Tiring of having to change over to new bodies in an almost ever decreasing time, [2], the Ultra-Humanite re-develops an albino white gorilla originally from Gorilla City to be able to house his super-brain and abilities reliably and transfers his consciousness into it as his new permanent body.

In this body, the Ultra-humanite is able to use his mind powers to ever increasing effects than any of his previous human hosts in a stable form. He remained in this form until the destruction wrought by the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Post-Crisis

The final destruction of the Ultra-Humanite's brain and transference of Johnny Thunder (JSA Vol 2, #37)

The body of the albino ape failed and died in the "Stealing Thunder" JSA adventure [3], forcing the Ultra-Humanite to return to changing ever failing human bodies in order to continue his existence, before trying to steal the 5th dimensional imp, Thunderbolt, as his host form. Thunder and the other JSA members defeat the Ultra-Humanite in which his brain is finally destroyed. [4]

One Year Later

The events of the Ultra-Humanite's original transference was changed to now having been forced by terminal cancer of Dolores Winters where Per Degaton and Despero traveled back in time to make him an offer - either die "tomorrow at 1:57 a.m. It'll be a massive brain hemorrhage brought on by the tumor ... [or] ... take a little trip with us." [5] The Ultra-Humanite, in the dying body of Winters, was brought forward in time to Metropolis, thus skipping over all of the intervening murders of his original body-hopping. The Ultra-Humanite's brain was transplanted into the body of the (now adult) albino gorilla.[6].

In the current reality, it is revealed that the super developed white ape body did not fail as shown earlier. The Ultra-Humanite continues on it, using his super-mental abilities to formulate strategies and programs to fulfill his ambitions of world domination as well as his own personal mind abilities.

The Ultra-Humanite has been seen as a member of the Time Stealers picked from his time when he inhabited a white gorilla long ago. He teamed up with Per Degaton, Despero, the Black Beetle| and Mister Mind to take control of all time. After they fought Booster Gold and Members of the Justice League in an altered Time line. When the Time line reformatted itself the Ultra-Humanite and the rest of the Time Stealers where pushed somewhere in time. Its current where and when abouts is unknown.
