Gravedigger is a legacy code name originally used by Ulysses Hazard in the U.S. Army in World War II. He joined the military, but was not allowed to fight as black soldiers were used to perform menial tasks such as digging graves. Having petitioned the Pentagon, he was allowed to become a special one-man unit named Gravedigger in honor of his profession. His son Achilles Hazard joined the Marine Corps and his grandson Perseus Hazard was the leader of Squad K. Tyson Sykes later uses the alias as a member of Checkmate. Oberon Sexton is a detective and crime novelist who also uses the name and assists Batman. Gravedigger was created by David Michelinie and Ed Davis, first appearing in Men of War #1. (1977)
