History
The true origin of the Green Lantern of Earth-9 is steeped in mystery. By her own account, she claims to have three distinctive origins - none of which may in fact be the correct one. In one account, the Green Lantern was an archaeologist and explorer named Lois Lane. She was recognized across the globe for her tough-minded attitude and her achievements. A billionaire playboy named Booster Gold hired Lane to explore the underwater ruins off the coast of Tampa, Florida. Florida had been devastated by a nuclear attack – an attack that also affected the once prosperous community of New Atlantis. Lane explored the undersea region of New Atlantis' forebearers, and discovered a community of mutated life forms known as the Sea Devils. The Sea Devils at one time were normal Atlanteans, but the ravages of nuclear radiation transformed them into monstrous, pitiable creatures. Touched by their plight, Lane refused to pirate their riches. She returned to Gold's yacht and told him that she would not exploit the Sea Devils' existence. Booster ordered his first mate, Kilowog, to murder Lane, whereupon he tossed her body overboard into the sea. The Sea Devils gathered Lane's remains and brought them inside of an ancient undersea castle. There, she made contact with the souls of all those who died in the Florida conflagration. The spirits mystically channeled the power of the Green Lantern into her, and Lois was brought back to life to avenge their deaths. With the Sea Devils at her side, the Green Lantern laid waste to Booster Gold's yacht.
In another account, the Green Lantern was a brutal warmonger living in post-war Czechoslovakia. Calling herself Darkside, she had escaped justice at the hands of the wartime tribunal and never stood trial for her actions at the Czech death camps. Darkside lorded over her terrain with a mystical orb of power. A cybernetic vigilante known as the Manhunter fought against Darkside's forces and hunted many of her cohorts for crimes against humanity. At some point in Manhunter's own past, she had tracked a woman (whom she believed to be Darkside) to an apartment in New Atlantis. She murdered her, only to discover later that the woman was in fact Darkside's twin sister. Due to Darkside's skills at necromancy, her sister's spirit appeared on the earthly plane and beckoned Manhunter to avenge her death. Her spirit accompanied Manhunter to Czechoslovakia where the power of the Green Lantern succeeded in destroying Darkside's mystical orb. With the power gone, Darkside herself ceased to exist. All of the power that was once at her command channeled into the spirit of her sister who became the new keeper of the Green Lantern.
In yet another account, the Green Lantern was actually a necromancer named Zatanna. Zatanna desired inclusion in an occult organization known as the Dark Circle – a coven led by powerful warlocks such as the Creeper, Etrigan, Bane, Sargon, X'hal and Ra's al Ghul. Cult leader Etrigan told Zatanna that if she could retrieve the fabled Green Lantern, then her place within the Dark Circle was assured. Zatanna was consumed with desire and spent the next three years, tracking down the elusive lantern. She eventually found the lantern in the ruins of a moldering cemetery. Using the magic at her command, she summoned the spirits of the dead to attack the lantern’s current keeper, but she misspoke the spell and the angry spirits turned against her. Her body died, but her own spirit was still trapped within. The keeper of the lantern revealed himself to be an aging pirate named Jason Blood. Blood promised to set Zatanna's soul free, if she but agreed to carry on his task, and become the new Keeper of the Lantern. Zatanna agreed, and the power to resurrect the dead passed down to her.
The power to interact with the spirits of the damned, brought the Green Lantern into contact with other heroes from her world. Together, they fought to save as many lives as possible during the realities-shifting event known as the Infinite Crisis. Shortly after the Crisis had passed, Green Lantern left her reality for the reality of New Earth. There, she met another chosen "Keeper of the Flame" – Kyle Rayner, also known as Ion.Powers and Abilities
Powers
All of the Green Lantern's abilities appear to stem from her weapons and equipment.
Paraphernalia
Equipment
The Green Lantern uses an old-fashioned Chinese Lantern suspended from a hook. A corona of green mist surrounds the lantern offset by the glowing, green light of the lantern itself. By placing the lantern atop the grave of the recently deceased, Green Lantern can temporarily resurrect the dead, so that they may carry out any unfinished business before returning to the afterlife.
Weapons
In one account, the Green Lantern possessed a mystical orb capable of wielding great power. The orb's full range of capabilities has never been revealed. One of it's known powers is the ability to channel blasts of green energy. Green Lantern can channel this energy and direct at any opponent she chooses.
Notes
- Despite the name that she chooses to go by, this Green Lantern has no association to the Green Lantern Corps.
