Synopsis for "The Fatal Chance"

Alan Scott attends a party where a wealthy philanthropist becomes unsteady and suddenly throws himself off the balcony. Not long after, Alan attends a life-saving surgical procedure, only for the brilliant surgeon he came to see to suddenly commit suicide with his own scalpel. Diver Claire Conway invites Alan to an exhibition where she'll be performing, but because the last two social engagements he attended in gruesome suicides, Alan decides to show up as Green Lantern instead. When Claire fails to come up from a dive in a timely manner, the hero uses his ring to part the waters and reveal her trapped in a net. A doctor in attendance agrees to treat her, but Green Lantern recognizes him being in attendance at the two suicides he witnessed as Alan Scott, and enters again to find the doctor trying to kill Claire with gas. The doctor gets away when a wooden support beam's shaken loose by the fight and lands on GL's head.

Upon awakening, Lantern connects that all of the victims attended a certain ski lodge recently, and goes there with Claire to see if there's any foul play going on. They are indeed attacked by skiing thugs, who take the pair prisoner after bopping Green Lantern insensate with a wooden ski. They're confronted by the suspicious doctor, who, after giving himself away by quoting a string of odds, unmasks to reveal Green Lantern's old enemy, the Gambler. He ties up the two inside a giant pinball machine, to be crushed by the giant ball. Green Lantern manages to get them free and they ride the ball out of the machine instead. After capturing the Gambler, he admits that at the lodge he tricked his victims into betting their fortunes, and when he won, they killed themselves over losing everything. Or so it seemed, as the Gambler actually killed them himself, hence why Green Lantern noticed him at the scene of both deaths. To escape justice, the Gambler himself commits suicide by jumping out the window.

Synopsis for "The Last Criminal Gets an Education"

Doiby notices his partner in uniform and going to charge his ring, Green Lantern saying he has an eerie feeling he'll be needed soon. No sooner has Green Lantern said that, than he's disappeared into thin air, and GL's enemy Knodar, the criminal from the future, has taken his place. By using a ray to put Doiby under his mental control, Knodar demands to know who he considers the greatest thief of all time. Doiby replies Jesse James, the train robber. Knodar sets out to do James one better.

Meanwhile, Green Lantern finds himself in Knodar's cell, being confronted by a teacher named Rhya for not returning a book she loaned him and dressing like that ancient hero Knodar's obsessed with. He quickly proves he's the real Green Lantern by using his ring to find the missing book, which he notices is about using mental power to transfer oneself through time. Rather than using the knowledge of the book to get back to his own time, Green Lantern just uses his ring, with Rhya coming along to help track down Knodar. The villain's currently using a powerful magnetic device to derail and rob a train. Doiby insults Knodar so that the criminal punches him, causing Doiby to fall and hit the button that launches a signal rocket with his head. Green Lantern speeds to the scene, but Knodar's able to escape by using his magnetic device to knock Green Lantern down with a large pipe.

Green Lantern and Rhya go in disguise aboard a big train to catch Knodar in the act, and indeed he captures the train by using his magnetic device to tear apart the very bridge the train's traveling over. However, he manages to grab Rhya, then capture Green Lantern when the hero comes to her rescue. They're put in a deathtrap where a passing train will hit some wires Knodar attached to the third rail, but Green Lantern uses his ring to pull the switch levers and saves them in the nick of time. From a clue Doiby gave them during the robbery, Green Lantern and Rhya track Knodar to the office of the owner of a large rail company, where Green Lantern knows a duel between their weapons will be useless and just punches Knodar out. He uses his ring to send Knodar and Rhya back to the 25th century. An uneasy Doiby wonders if Knodar might still be controlling him from the 25th century, while an indifferent Alan Scott heads out for the evening.
