Synopsis for "Secret Origin (Part I)"

The story opens with Hal Jordan as a young boy, watching his father, Martin, go down in flame. Despite his father's jet crashing, Hal can't get enough of watching planes fly, which puts him at odds with his mother and his older brother, Jack. Jim, his younger brother, is mild-mannered and cautious. On the eve of his 18th birthday, after a fight with his mother, Hal sneaks out and waits all night in front of the Air Force recruiting office to enlist.

Jordan grows up to be a courageous--if dangerous--pilot. He's constantly pushing the limits and brawling with those that get in his way--including future Green Lantern and Marine Corps member John Stewart. But when Hal's mother dies, Jack wrongly blames Hal for constantly making her worry.

The issue closes with Abin Sur, Jordan's predecessor, confronting the Five Inversions about their Blackest Night prophecy.
