Guadalcanal is a 2,510-square-mile (6,500 km2) tropical island in the South-Western Pacific. It is the largest island in the Solomon Islands and was the scene of fierce fighting between the Allies (predominantly American) and Japanese forces in the Guadalcanal Campaign of World War II.

Guadalcanal is a 2,510-square-mile (6,500 km2) tropical island in the South-Western Pacific. It is the largest island in the Solomon Islands and was the scene of fierce fighting between the Allies (predominantly American) and Japanese forces in the Guadalcanal Campaign of World War II.

At the end of the war, Honiara, on the north coast of Guadalcanal, became the new capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. Guadalcanal is mainly covered in tropical rainforest and jungle and it has a mountainous interior with an active volcano Mount Popomanaseu.
