History

The "Gulag", the name given to Superman's metahuman rehabilitation facility, was constructed on the devastated Kansas wasteland as his solution for the growing rogue metahuman problem that was plaguing the world. Due to its vast size, it was intended to house prisoners for months to come, but within two weeks of its construction it filled beyond capacity, though due to its architect Mister Miracle it was able to contain its numbers. Kryptonian battlesuit robots stood guard watching over the residents in the "Gulag's" beautiful environment, while Superman holograms attempted to re-educate them in the proper use of their abilities. Its warden Captain Comet dealt with the hard-case dissenters among the populace such as Von Bach.

Eventually much of the entire population of the "Gulag" revolted to the point where they were breaching the walls and killing their captors. The brainwashed Captain Marvel's use of his Shazam lightning bolt to burst open the "Gulag" caused the warring populace to spill forth to engage the assembled Justice League members outside in battle. After this incident which was resolved by a nuclear missile that annihilated most if not all of the metahuman population present at the location during this battle, Superman used the remains of the "Gulag" as plowing instruments for breaking up the fallow ground of a now-deradiated Kansas wasteland.

Trivia

  • According to Kingdom Come / Revelations, the architectural interior of the Gulag are modeled after Wonder Woman's Paradise Island heritage and reconstruction of lost Kryptonian technology from Superman's Fortress of Solitude.
