Haines began his criminal career by working his way up through the ranks of organized crime in his hometown of New York City. His skill at swindling people earned him the nickname of "Gyp", and he soon was fronting his own gang.

One day, while walking around one of the more well-to-do areas of the city, he took note of the fact that many of the city's more prosperous citizens dwelled in penthouse apartments atop high-rise buildings with strong internal security measures. It occurred to him that if someone could manage to scale the exteriors of the buildings, and bypass the interior security, they could easily rob those citizens blind. This gave Haynes the idea to become skilled in acrobatics, and so he trained himself and his gang diligently to prepare for this. Once this was finished, Haynes became the Acrobat, and he and his mob began a daring string of penthouse robberies.

At first, police were stymied by the crimes, unable to determine how the thieves were able to get in. It was only when the authorities brought in the costumed heroes Hawkman and Hawkgirl that the truth was discovered. The winged wonders were swiftly able to apprehend Haynes and his mob and stop the thefts.

Haynes was tried and convicted for the Acrobat crimes.
