The succubus Chantinelle's prior association with John Constantine was not unknown to the First of the Fallen when he came to her in the soul garden. When she saw him, she knew that he wanted to rape her; to do even more unspeakable things. So she leapt through the barriers, and escaped from Hell into London, crashing down into the muck and filth of the Thames river. John Constantine had grown restless that night, beginning to wonder how long he could keep the dark aspects of his life away from his current girlfriend, Kit Ryan. He left, late at night, and was drawn to Chantinelle's location. She explained that she needed his help, because the First of the Fallen had discovered her relationship with him, and if he found out their true history, he would kill her, and use her to get to John. He agreed to help her, warning that she would owe him even more than she did before, if he succeeded.
Chantinelle owed John because some years ago, she and her lover had arrived at his door, pregnant. The trouble was that her lover was an angel, and that their spawn would be a target for both the forces of Heaven and Hell. They themselves, would be marked for death. Reluctantly, he had agreed to help. He set them up in an abandoned house, and laid out runes to protect them from Hell's sight. Then, he had gone to visit a man possessed by a demon to ascertain just who would be chasing Ellie and her lover. As it turned out, no one in Hell had even known about the tryst. Unfortunately, John had returned to the house to find that not Hell, but Heaven had discovered the union. The seven archangels had come down, slain Ellie's lover, and taken the child. Though he had saved her from the clutches of Hell, Ellie had been left with nothing - but she still owed him.
To help Ellie, John procured a set of surgical instruments and warned her that she would not like what she would have to do to escape Hell forever. Meanwhile, the First of the Fallen and the Queen of the succubi Triskele managed to locate Chantinelle on earth, and travelled there in search of her. What they found was the same house where John had housed Ellie when she gave birth, covered in blood. Though John was there, and apparently quite drained, the demons could not find Chantinelle, due to some kind of masking sigil. John explained that they could not find her because the masking sigil was on her. He had carved it into her very soul. This counted as the third time that John had outsmarted the First. Despite the fact that a hat-trick like that was, according to Hell's law, a free pass for Constantine, the First promised that their final encounter would come soon. He returned to Hell, and when Agony and Ecstacy came to visit judgment on him, he tore them to pieces, swearing that he would drag Constantine to Hell himself.
Ellie, meanwhile, would have to grow used to living on earth, in hiding.
