Henry Henshaw (Prime Earth)

Henshaw was part of a team who was returning from a 10 year mission to Jupiter.^[2] Concerned that this Henshaw will suffer the same fate as his Pre-Flashpoint counterpart, Superman checked on the returning space craft and had to save it. He found that Henshaw is the only one of the crew on board and took him to his spare Fortress of Solitude in the Himalayas.

Henshaw's body was taken control over by Blanque who used Henshaw to free himself. Blanque was so focused on killing Superman that he lets his mental control of Henshaw go, allowing Henshaw to climb into an alien space ship and apparently uses its weapons to blast Blanque in the back, allowing Superman to imprison Blanque again. After Superman talked with Henshaw and left, Henshaw revealed it wasn't the space ship's weapons he blasted Blanque with but a red glowing crystal.^[3]

The alien mass-murderer Hyathis arrived on Earth, confronting Henshaw and revealing the red glowing crystal was half of the reality warping Oblivion Stone and that Henshaw had used it. Experiencing a vision of these events, Superman confronted Hyathis and realized the second half of the Oblivion Stone was in his Fortress of Solitude. Hyathis teleported away and Henshaw's companion, Chambers, asks him about Superman but Henshaw pretended he didn't know anything.

Following the cosmic upheavals of the Rebirth period, this character's history was revised.

Current Origin

Hank Henshaw was a crew member of the doomed space shuttle Excalibur. Hank and the other three members of the Excalibur crew — including his wife, Terri — were exposed to cosmic radiation from a 'strange' solar flare, resulting in the crash of their shuttle. The radiation, which should have killed them, mutated them and turned them into so-called 'monsters'. They came into conflict with Superman, and in the end, Henshaw's body withered away, though his conciousness lived on, able to inhabit technology. Distraught, Terri committed suicide, leaving Henshaw a widower and further cementing his hatred of Superman.^[4]

Later Career

Later, following Superman's death at the hands of Doomsday, Henshaw would seize the opportunity to take his revenge. Building a new body, a replica of Superman's, Henshaw became the Cyborg Superman. Gaining the loyalty of the alien warlord Mongul, Henshaw brought Earth to the brink of destruction, participating in the destruction of Coast City. Eventually, however, Henshaw and Mongul were defeated, and Superman returned.^[5]^[6]

At some point, through unknown means, Henshaw was given a new, powerless, purely human body and was imprisoned in Superman's secret Himalayan sanctuary. However, unbeknownst to Superman, Hank had come to carry half of the reality-warping Oblivion Stone.

Rebirth

Revenge

Eventually, Henshaw used his half of the Oblivion Stone to set a plan in motion to regain his powers and take revenge on Superman. He started by forming a team consisting of Metallo, the Eradicator, Blanque, and Mongul. He then had them infiltrate Superman's spare Fortress in order to steal the other half of the Oblivion Stone, destroying the fortress and murdering two inter-dimensional refugees in the process. After Mongul attempted to usurp leadership, Henshaw used the completed stone to become Cyborg Superman once again and forced Mongul into submission. The newly restored Cyborg Superman then declared his intention to recruit Zod.^[7]

While breaking into Belle Reve Penitentiary with the Eradicator's assistance, Cyborg Superman described his history with Superman up to his trying to destroy the Earth.^[8] After recruiting Zod, Henshaw led his team to fight Superman at his Fortress of Solitude.

However, Superman gained the help of his allies Supergirl, Super-Man, Steel, Superwoman, and Lex Luthor. Initially overwhelmed, the villains were able to defeat them by sending them into the Phantom Zone. But shortly afterwards, General Zod betrayed his so-called partners and sent Henshaw into the Phantom Zone as well; Zod only used Henshaw and his team to rescue his wife and son from the Zone. Henshaw's plans fell apart in which Superman and his allies escaped and the cyborg is indefinitely imprisoned in the Zone.^[9]^[10]

Regretting Henshaw's inprisonnement in the Phantom Zone, Superman decided to free him from the Phantom Zone in hopes of preventing him to kill again, he subdued him and locked in a room in the Fortress where he would relive his happiest memories. However Henshaw soon decided to escape the Fortress, Henshaw pushed his consiousness far enough to hack into the Central Power Battery of Oa and discover the existence of the Phantom Ring. He then lured Guardian Kada Sal to move the Ring so he could kill him through it. Been that he had arrived first at the scene, Henshaw chose to attach the Phantom Ring to the Green Lantern Simon Baz without the latter's knowledge. ^[11] As he now controlled every Green Lantern Ring that was linked with the Central Power Battery, he led Simon to believe that the Guardians wanted him to go to Earth and made him desert his fellow Lanterns. ^[12] Then, pretending to be Superman and that he had been trapped in the Fortress by the Ravager Eon, Henshaw tricked Simon into freeing him from the Fortress.^[13]. Once free, Henshaw took the Phantom Ring and deactivated Simon's Ring before violently defeating him and leaving him stranded outside the Fortress.^[14] He later journeyed to Sector 1355 where he was greeted by his Ravagers and after having been informed of their developpement, he teleported to Mogo through the Central Power Battery and easily defeated the Guardians and Rami while the Ravagers captured the Green Lantern Corps.^[15] As a way to prove that the Green Lanterns were not fearless, he then went to Coast City to destroy it again and recreate the fear Hal Jordan felt the last time he did. However, he was stopped and defeated by the now-freed Green Lantern Corps which forced to escape.^[16]^[17]

Death Metal

Cyborg Superman was one of the villains recruited by Superman to fight in the final battle of the Multiverse. He notably helped the latter fight his counterparts from the Last 52 Multiverse.^[18] ^[19] ^[20] ^[21]

Electronic Consciousness: As an energy being, Henshaw can transfer his consciousness into nearby machinery.
- Technopathy: Henshaw is able to manipulate as well as animate any form of electronic device and energy sources with his mind. He used this function of his powers in order to leech off of the energy of Oa's Central Power Battery.^[22]
Kryptonian Cyborg Physiology: Henshaw's most often used vessel is a cloned, cybernetic body of Superman. As such, he has all the powers of an average Kryptonian under the effects of a "yellow" sun in addition to any weaponry he might incorporate into his cybernetics.
- Cybernetic Enhancement
  - Energy Projection: Henshaw's cybernetic limb conceals a powerful energy cannon powerful enough to hurt the likes of Mongul^[7] and Superman.^[23]
- Superhuman Strength: Henshaw's cybernetic body is strong enough to draw blood from the likes of Mongul with a single blow^[7] and hurt Superman^[24] and Supergirl.^[25]

Hank Henshaw was created by Dan Jurgens, first appearing in Adventures of Superman #466. However, in the Prime Earth continuity, Hank Henshaw first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Team 7 (Volume 2) #5 by Justin Jordan, Pascal Alixe, and Jesús Merino.
Henry Henshaw was stated to be returning from a 10 year mission to Jupiter.^[27] However, Henshaw remembers the events of New Earth (where he landed on Earth with his crew) rather then the events of Prime Earth (where he landed alone). Mister Oz reveals that the remerging of the New Earth and Prime Earth Supermen caused the realities of New Earth and Prime Earth to themselves merge into a familiar but also new reality.^[28]
