History

The Cold Ray Gun is a handheld weapon designed by European physicist Doctor Joar Mahkent. The gun is a unique weapon that can instantly freeze molecules of moisture in the air, transforming it into a sheen of ice. The Cold Gun could also freeze living tissue by solidifying the moisture inside of a person's body. The effect was often instantaneous, and flash-frozen specimens were commonly placed into a state of suspended animation. When Doctor Mahkent first adopted the guise of the Icicle, he used his cold gun to kill a gangster named Lanky Leeds. The permafrost that collected around Leeds' face disguised his features, making him resemble Mahkent. In 1947, Green Lantern (Alan Scott) investigated a mysteriously frozen ocean liner that floated into Gotham Harbor. He found Leeds' frozen corpse, but mistakenly believed that it was Doctor Mahkent. Green Lantern soon learned the truth however when he unmasked the Icicle and discovered that his foe was actually Mahkent himself.
