Synopsis for "Lessons Learned"
Max Mercury tries to reconnect with his daughter Helen Claiborne, but just as he stands in front of her house he quickly decides against it and walks away. Instead he gets back to Bart and takes him on a nighttime run. Impulse misjudges a jump over an open drawbridge and Max has to save him from the fall. But Max is even more annoyed by the fact that Impulse enjoyed the fall and would like to repeat it.
Later the two speedsters come across a hockey arena which is surrounded by the police because some criminals have hostages in there. Max wants to stay behind and watch how Impulse solves the situation. As expected Bart jumps in without any plan and the slippery ice does not help him either. In the end, Impulse is able to defeat the criminals, but Max is furious because his protégé did not care for the innocent hostages first. But Bart thinks he did a good job - stating that Max tends to think a little too much.
After returning home, Max again goes over to Helen's house and has the courage to knock. They talk briefly, but it is clear that Helen is still mad at Max for lying to her about him being her father. So Max gets back to Bart and, this time, takes him on a camping trip. This does not work well because Bart gets bored very quickly. Max tries to have a meaningful conversation with Bart about life in general, but the youngster is not able to think about anything else than the stuff that happened today. So Max sets up a final test for Bart. He creates a small avalanche and sticks his foot between some rocks. Instead of saving Max, Impulse turns all rocks into dust and covers a furious Max with it. Max really has the feeling that all his teachings of Bart were for naught.
Silently, both return home. After Max went to bad, Bart suddenly faces a masked woman who holds something that looks like a gun. But it is just a kind of translator. The woman takes her mask off and tells Bart that she is his mother ...
