Synopsis for "Super Freaks"

The Justice League continue to battle the monsters of the Black Spirit Lake valley, but each time the fight gets harder as the monsters learn from their experiences. During the battle, Kishana Lewis saves Batman from one of the monsters. Being a civilian and lacking superpowers, the heroes demand Kishana to stay with the other civilians for her own safety, but she refuses, until Martian Manhunter needs to be taken to the infirmary.

After repelling the creatures, Superman notes that the creatures are coming through a dimensional gateway. Green Lantern offers to evacuate the civilians to the nearest town, but Batman and Superman point out that the point is moot. If they can't stop the monsters, the civilians would not be safe anywhere else. The League determine that the creatures exist in an absolute zero environment and when they come to Earth, they adapt at super-speed.

The gate opens again, and the JLA attack. Superman figures a way to closing the portal by creating what Flash calls Lee-Kirby science, a localized microscopic supernova. The creatures disappear. Batman notes, however, that they will return.

Meanwhile, Martian Manhunter works with Kishana to learn more about the creatures, which they look into Kishana's mind-scape to discover the creatures, recognized by J'onn, that the creatures are called the Winter that once attacked Mars, threatening a deep and lasting cold, just as they do here. Manhunter and Kishana suddenly start to freeze; the hotel director William Hume stands before their vulnerable real bodies, noting that they will die if they die in their minds.

Kishawna realizes that she is both African and Indian, and hears drums that make her spirit form take on a new light. She vanquishes Manhunter's injuries and melts the ice that is encasing them. The two awaken, and they kiss.

Hume opens up a gate into the beyond that contains ever more of the alien creatures.
