Synopsis for "When the Dead Call"
At the JSA headquarters, The Flash, Stargirl, Doctor Mid-Nite, Jakeen Thunder and the Thunderbolt, Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, Wildcat and Power Girl are accosted by the Gentleman Ghost. Stargirl and Power Girl try to attack him, but he turns intangible and vanishes. The team believes he is a trickster thief, but the Thunderbolt disagrees - he's an actual ghost.
In a series of flashbacks, we see the Ghost's life: the death of his mother, and his subsequent career as a pickpocket. With stolen money, he goes to the Gypsy Queen, who lives by the Tyburn Gallows. She prophesies that he will die by hanging, and 'meet his end by noble blood', only to return as a ghost. She also says that centuries in the future, he will fight his fiercest foes in the British royal castle. If his foes die that night, he will live again. He refuses to believe her.
On Hart's Island in New York City, Jakeem Thunder is considering the Gentleman Ghost's use of his late brother - a brother he never knew he had. Convincing the Thunderbolt to help him, he meets all his late family. They perished in the fire that killed Jakeem's grandmother, and his aunt never mentioned his brother because she blamed him for the fire. Although they must return to their rest, Jakeem is left with a least the knowledge of their existence.
On the road to Gotham City, Jay Garrick and Alan Scott are traveling. Under Jay's questioning, Alan admits the identity of his ghost - Ted Musgrave, his college roommate, who died in an accident at the Gotham Broadcasting Antenna years ago. Alan still blames himself for the death, and both heroes vow to make Craddock pay for his crimes. At the broadcasting antenna where Musgrave died, they are accosted by the two ghosts. Musgrave uses his own standing charge to electrocute Jay, but he recovers. Alan is then hit by falling debris.
At the brownstone, Ma Hunkel is clearing up the mess causes by Craddock's appearance, when he reappears. He is looking for Wonder Woman, but he is instead ambushed by Power Girl. He vanishes again, leaving Power Girl to wonder how they can catch him...
