Jack Gold was a down-on-his-luck reporter who worked for a tabloid known as the National Chronicle. Alcoholism and a bad attitude cost him his career at more prestigious newspapers, as well as his marriage to his wife, Annie. Jack was assigned to interview a mysterious man known as Baron Winters and Winters recruited to work for him as part of his "Night Force". Winter had Jack steal classified documents from the Pentagon relating to the parapsychological study and through them, he learned about a woman named Vanessa van Helsing. Vanessa had been locked up inside the Potomac Psychiatric Hospital for seven years and a keen perception of occult forces. When Van Helsing was released, she too joined Baron Winters' team and Jack and she grew close, eventually entering into a loveless marriage.

  • Journalism: Although Jack is a skilled journalist, his bad habits have affected his career choices and he mostly works within tabloid circles.
  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
