History

James Gordon was selected as Police Commissioner of Gotham City originally because of his honest intent and good service record as a line police officer. However he was completely ineffective against the open crime lords and gangsters who controlled the political and governmental basis of the city and government. It was because of that he allowed the justice seeking vigilante Batman to do what he could not -- openly fight crime in an effective and at times brutal way in order to slow the crime activities of Gotham's underground.

Mysteryman

At one point, Gordon briefly adopted the secret identity of Mysteryman to help Batman on a case.[2]

Notes

  • This version of James Gordon (Earth-Two), including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the Multiverse in the 1985-86 Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series and is now considered apocryphal.
  • Despite later portrayals of being an honest police officer, Gordon was compliant to open crime organizations that ran the political machinery of Gotham City on Earth-Two. He preferred to allow Wayne and later Grayson to take care of the open threats that he could not directly do so against.
  • Like all true Golden Age characters, the James Gordon of Earth-Two does not exactly match the original printed page character as James Gordon had a teenage son and wife (as shown in Superman Family #211) unlike the true Golden Age version of the character who was childless and was unmarried.
  • Due to the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, he along with all members of the Earth-Two dimension were erased from ever having existed and was only remembered by Kal-L and his wife Lois Lane-Kent after Earth-Two was erased from ever having existed.

Trivia

  • Gordon was succeeded by his long-time friend and partner Batman I of Earth-Two. He died shortly after retiring (All-star #66) due to old age.
  • A version of the Mysteryman costume appears in Kingdom Come, battling at the Gulag.
