Synopsis for "Starlight, Star Bright... First Star I See Tonight"

Mrs. Crowley tries to keep Jonah Hex from leaving the boarding house, but he refuses to listen. He needs to find Emmylou and discover why she had shot him at the Assayer's office.

Meanwhile, a woman named Silver Ames comes upon Marshall J.D. Hart. Silver is hunting down the world's most reputable gunslingers and challenging them duels. She tells J.D. that she can outdraw him, but he dismisses her intentions. As he turns away, Silver pulls her gun and shoots him in the back three times, killing him. J.D.'s body is brought into town where Mei Ling identifies him at Lucas Zuvimbi's mortuary.

Jonah meanwhile, continues to travel along a rocky cliff when a rockslide unseats him from his horse, sending him spiraling down into a cavern. When he awakens, he finds that his horse is dead, and he is in need of more medical attention. To make matters worse, he has to fight off a cougar that inhabits the cave.

Elsewhere, Emmylou Hartley is still remorseful over shooting Jonah. She decides that she no longer wishes to associate with Brett or his gang any longer. Brett tries to talk to her, but Emmy tells him that she is leaving. He begins to threaten her, but she slashes him across the face with her knife and runs from the house.

Later, Jonah manages to survive his scuffle with the cougar and gets back to Red Dog. He stops at Doc Bierstein's office, who promptly patches up the latest batch of injuries. As Jonah leaves the office, he finds Silver Ames waiting for him. Ames proudly confesses to killing J.D. Hart and tells him that Jonah is the next on her list. Jonah chastises her form and technique, but Silver is not backing down. She begins counting to three, at which point Jonah whips out his Colt and fires a bullet straight into her chest, killing her.

Notes

  • The cover to this issue is slightly misleading as Jonah Hex is not present with Mei Ling when she identifies J.D. Hart's body at the funeral home. Also, the scene depicting Silver Ames preparing to shoot Jonah from behind does not take place either.

Trivia

  • At one point in this issue, Jonah sees a shooting star in the sky. What he doesn't realize is that this celestial effect is actually the handiwork of the Monitor, a character who soon becomes important in the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths event.
