Joey Abernathy was a troubled kid with super powers.
History
During a fishing trip, the Abernathy family from the Metropolis suburb Ridge Bay gained super powers from a nearby meteor. Mr. Abernathy decided to become a hero, but died on his very first act. He helped Superman evacuate a burning building, but underestimated his powers and was not invulnerable enough.
Joey took it hard, and blamed Superman for his father's death. He crafted his own superhero costume and used it to strongarm bullies at his school. He took out his anger on Superman. His mother went after the real estate developer that made the building her husband died in, as it was not up to code. The JLA prevented bloodshed, and Mrs. Abernathy relented, as she did not want to kill him in front of her children. She found peace, but Joey still hated Superman.
