Synopsis for "Hearts and Minds, Part I"

On the planet Ranstad-7, a squad of Green Lanterns under the command of Katma Tui are fighting a losing battle against an invasion force. Lanterns Galius and Arkkis are killed when they attempt to break out. Katma orders Kilowog to escape and warn the Guardians of the Universe about their enemies. Kilowog reluctantly does so, as Katma cover his escape.

On the Watchtower, John Stewart and Hawkgirl are making some repairs to the station. Suddenly, an unidentified object is detected on approach towards Earth. John reaches the site of the impact first and startlingly finds Kilowog, who is barely alive. Before passing out, Kilowog tells John that "they" got Katma. John contacts the League to taking care of Kilowog before heading out to find Katma.

J'onn is able to heal Kilowog at the infirmary and the Green Lantern tells the League that his unit was trying to stop the Legion of the Third Eye, a fanatical cult lead by one Despero of Kalanor. Unfortunately, Despero's forces were powered by something that rivaled even the energy of the Lanterns. Kilowog also explains that Katma is John's former trainer and lover. Flash takes Kilowog to John's apartment to find his power battery to recharge Kilowog's ring, and in the process of finding a quart of Bob and Terry's ice cream and a tape of Old Yeller (both of which Kilowog eats by mistake, declaring both delicious).

Meanwhile, John found Ranstad-7. His ring is able to track Katma Tui to Kalanor. Arriving, John finds a desert world with a broken people. He goes undercover after stopping two soldiers from arresting a Kalanorian for having books. He eventually find Katma's living quarters and her power ring. However, he is caught and subdue by two guards, and is taken to the royal palace to be judge by Despero.

The leader of the Legion of the Third Eye explains to John that he was once an outcast for possessing a third eye and was banished into the deserts by his people. It was during his travel that he was beset by bandits and was saved by the Flame of Py'tar. The Py'tar foretold that Despero would lead Kalanor into a paradise. Using the Py'tar's powers, Despero took control of Kalanor, and he now intends to spread the glory of the Py'tar throughout the universe. John remains skeptical of Despero's intentions as anything but benign and attempts to attack the cult leader, but Despero's Py'tar given powers are quite formidable, fueled by his own rage and hatred. John is then knock down by Despero's newest convert: Katma. Despero orders Katma to sacrifice John to the Py'tar's central room, revealing the Py'tar to be a massive fire. Despite John's pleas, Katma throws John into the flames of Py'tar.

As John falls into the Py'tar, he is teleported to an underground chamber by Kalanorians Shifflet and Radocko, who operated a matter transporter that rescue John. Shifflet introduce himself to John as the leader of the Anti-Despero resistance. The matter transporter has rescue few people from Despero's sacrifices, but it was mostly thanks to Katma, who reveals to be not under Despero's thrall. John is overjoyed in seeing her, but only gets punched by Katma, who chastises him for nearly blowing her cover. She explains that Shiflet and his people rescued her, and helped her get into the palace as a priestess. She knows that Despero is raising a massive force for his conquest, but doesn't know the specific plans. John gives Katma her power ring, and they share a passionate kiss.

At the palace, Despero empowers his soldiers with the power of the Py'tar, which they will use to spread the greatness of Despero and the Py'tar across the universe. The Legion takes flight to the stars, as Katma watches in horror.
