Synopsis for "A Stranger Walks Among Us!"

When Superman, Batman, Hawkman, Flash , Green Lantern, and Green Arrow arrive at the JLA satellite, their questions as to who called the meeting is soon answered by the arrival of the Phantom Stranger. The Stranger warns them of a curse that has been put on them by Felix Faust, and that their salvation lies in Rutland, Vermont.

Because it is Halloween, it's the annual super-hero Halloween parade in Rutland, and the heroes decide to help its organizer Tom Fagan with the parade. Their foe Felix Faust begins his curse by possessing the bodies of partygoers and magically giving them the same powers of the super-heroes they are dressed up as. As the heroes fight off their attackers, the Phantom Stranger collects different possessions owned by the heroes during their fight.

When the the bell tolls midnight, the Phantom Stranger uses these items to cast a counter spell that protects the heroes from the curse put on them by Faust. The heroes then battle off demons that were summoned by Faust and turn him over to the police. With their adventure over, the heroes are about to thank the Phantom Stranger and make him a member of the JLA, but find that he has disappeared.

  • This story is part of a trilogy revolving around Rutland, Vermont's Halloween parade hosting by Tom Fagan. Two stories were printed by Marvel Comics during this time which also are located in Rutland, Vermont. They are Thor #207 and Amazing Adventures #16.
  • Further a number of the parade goers are dressed up in costumes of super-heroes that were not part of DC Comics Earth-One continuity. Aside from the Earth-Two (JSA) and Earth-S (Shazam) costumes, there were reasonable facsimile of popular Marvel Comics characters. They included:
    • "Commando America", based on Captain America.
    • "Thunder God" based on Marvel's Thor.
    • An unnamed arachnid character resembling Spider-Man.

  • No trivia.
