Quote1 We were a club, Zatanna. A club of friends with mutual interests. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, J'onn J'onzz, Aquaman, Green Lantern and I... We were the original members, back then. Hard to believe, but we were so unsophisticated we operated out of a cave. There were few tensions... We meshed, we were a team. Quote2

Justice League of America #187 is an issue of the series Justice League of America (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 1981.

Synopsis for "Proteus Says: All Things Must Change!"

On monitor duty in the satellite headquarters, The Flash and Zatanna spend a quiet evening together in conversation. She reveals her reasons for changing to yet another new costume, which is neither a copy of her father's garb (as was her first costume, now used only in her performances as a stage magician), nor her mother's (as was her second). Meanwhile, Justice League members on individual cases are attacked by the Creeper's old enemy Proteus, who causes them to assume the physical appearances of ordinary citizens, losing their memories of their true identities in the process, while Proteus's gang members assume the appearances of the super-heroes. The real Flash finds himself teamed with the bogus heroes at a jewelry exhibit, and suspects something is wrong when he sees "Zatanna" back in her former costume. Before he can act, however, Proteus strikes, and the Flash, too, is replaced with a lookalike. Flash recovers in time to defeat his doppelganger and Proteus, while Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Elongated Man inadvertently use their super-powers, regain their memories, and rendezvous at the jewelry exhibit in time to battle and overcome the disguised members of Proteus's gang. Finally, the Flash locates the transformed Zatanna as a street derelict, and helps her regain her true identity.

Notes

  • This story continues in the next issue.
  • This issue is the debut of Zatanna's new costume. In fact, the introduction of the costume is a plot point in the issue, representing Zatanna's decision to express more of her individuality in contrast to her two previous outfits (which derived from the legacy of her father and mother, respectively), in addition to clueing Flash on to Proteus's plot to replace the JLA with imposters (as his Zatanna impersonator used her previous costume design).
