For more than ten years, your world has been a toy to me. Kamburu was a dead, sand-heaped corner of the Sahara Desert, but I made it into a 600,000 square mile paradise.

History
Around the turn of the 21st century, in another world, on a parallel timeline, the troubled nation of Kamburu was labeled a "rogue state" by the U.S. government, and was sanctioned by the United Nations, because Kamburu harbored a mysterious figure known as Khouriga Edjem, who had been indicted for terrorism by an international court. Edjem had been providing advanced technological aid to Kamburu, which created exportable surpluses of energy and food, transforming Kamburu from an impoverished backwater to a regional economic power. This attracted the world's journalists to the country, to seek to interview the reclusive Khouriga Edjem, but none was granted access. Edjem at this time was under attack from the U.S. military, the Justice League, and Lex Luthor's LexPax Institute, so his public unavailability seemed normal.
Ultimately Khouriga Edjem's retreat was overrun by his super-powered enemies, and amid the turmoil Edjem was revealed to be the intergalactic conqueror Mongul, and his miracle-working energy source was revealed to be a parasitic drain on Green Lantern. Mongul was punched unconscious and rocketed into outer space, and killed in an explosive decompression event, by Jor-El.

- Edjem formed his own superpowered group of super-powered agents: Aqualord, Black Adam, Kondor, Thane, and Wildfire, and this group got into a conflict with this timeline's version of the Justice League: Captain Thunder, Flash (Wally West), Marksman, Midnight, Triumph, The Unknown, Widow and Wonder Woman.
