Kate Riordan was a member of a proud Bludhaven police family. The latest in the line and a media darling, she became the figurehead of good, clean police officers in the corrupt city. This did not sit well with mayor Sean Holcomb, who decided to take action. In a media event, he arranged for an honor to be awarded to all 20 Riordans in the force - only to have the stand in the park explode. Kate was the only one to survive, but was horribly scarred and lost part of her memory. She became Hella to exact revenge for the murder of her family.
