Korugar was one of the planets under the protection of Green Lantern Sinestro. Unfortunately, Sinestro's brand of order required that the citizens of Korugar, and especially Korugar City were subjugated, and meant to revere him.
While training Hal Jordan, the citizens of Korugar rebelled under the leadership of Katma Tui, one of Sinestro's own trainees, and forced them to flee. Eventually, the Green Lantern Corps arrived, and Sinestro was captured and put on trial.
After Sinestro was banished to the anti-matter universe, Katma Tui was given the position of Green Lantern for Sector 1417, and her home planet of Korugar along with it. Several Lanterns from other planets would guard the sector until Soranik Natu became Korugar's third recorded Lantern.
The DC Universe heavily changed its continuity into the DCnU following the events of Flashpoint in 2011. This was part of an effort to make storylines more accessible to newer readers, beginning with the New 52. This new timeline combines elements from the DCU, Vertigo Universe and Wildstorm Universe while drastically changing the origins and histories of characters.
Shortly after Sinestro had become a Green Lantern once again, he traveled to Earth to recruit Hal Jordan in freeing his planet from his own Sinestro Corps. Eventually the two were successful in powering down the corps and freeing Korugar of it's oppression. Not very long after the rise of the Third Army the First Lantern, Volthoom had arrived at Korugar to devour the planet and the fears of it's people, he was successful and Sinestro became enraged. Shortly after, Sinestro merged himself with Parallax and with assistance of many other Lanterns defeated the First Lantern, however Sinestro told Hal Jordan that with Korugar gone, he had no place in the world. He then reactivated his corps and freed Parallax before disappearing.
