Krypton Chronicles #1 is an issue of the series Krypton Chronicles (Volume 1) with a cover date of September, 1981.

Synopsis for "The Search for Superman's Roots"

Morgan Edge calls Clark Kent and Perry White into his office at Galaxy Broadcasting. He informs them that he wants to produce the definitive mini-series biography on Superman and assigns Kent the burdensome task of investigating Superman's roots. Kent reluctantly agrees to the assignment and secretly changes into Superman shortly after the meeting concludes.

He flies off to his Fortress of Solitude where he finds his cousin, Supergirl, waiting for him. Together, they board a spaceship and, after a hyper-drive shortcut through sub-space, reach the planet, Rokyn, orbiting a red giant star. When they land at the city of Kandor, Superman is amazed that, although it appeared that the city was destroyed when it was enlarged [1], it has already been rebuilt and vastly improved in a short amount of time. They are greeted by the president of the ruling Science Council, their cousin Van-Zee and Supergirl's parents, Zor-El and Allura.

Van-Zee tells Superman that the city's enlargement only destroyed the newer buildings made of grahu, an artificial building material . Older buildings, records and computers all survived. However, the Kandorians still had to rebuild nearly half their city. To help, several reformed criminals were recruited, some of them known to Superman and Supergirl. These former criminals greet Superman and Supergirl and apologize. Zora Vi-Lar says she is sorry for trying to destroy Supergirl's powers[2]. Brenn-Bir and his two cronies repent their crime spree[3]. Shyla Kor-Onn feels shame for having framed Supergirl[4].

Van-Zee and Zor-El take Superman into Kandor's House of El Family Vault, built by Superman's uncle Nim-El in memory of all of the esteemed members of the House of El. They regale each other with stories of Superman's prestigious family line including: Gam-El, the architect of Kryptonopolis, Tala-El, a pioneering diplomat, Pir-El, a respected military commander, as well as many others.

As the Kryptonians research several generations of Superman's family lineage, a mysterious female foe sneaks into the vault and causes several dangerous "accidents", though no one is hurt. Then they are surprised by the appearance of a large and dangerous Kryptonian monster known as a Yagrum, extinct since Krypton's explosion. However, the monster is actually a projection by the unknown woman assailant.

Trivia

  • This issue includes a one-page glossary of various people, terms and locations on the planet Krypton.
  • "Drygur Moliom" is a title, rather than a name, for the President of the Science Council.
  • Superman and Supergirl's uncle Nim-El is only mentioned. As he never appeared in earlier trips to Kandor either, he and his wife may have died before Superman rescued the bottle city from Brainiac. More strange is the absence of Nim-El's son, their cousin Don-El, Kandor's police chief.
