As a child, Princess Emerald was sucked into limbo along with several other nobles, including her father, Prince Garnet, Lord Garnet and Prince Ruby. They eventually got out (except for Prince Garnet, who had entered on free will). Before she could leave, the demonic creature that trapped them there placed an enchantment on her.

She eventually married and had three daughters. She ruled the Emerald Domain after her husband died, but had psychological problems. When her eldest daughter was given to Dark Opal as tribute and died, those problems only became worse. Eventually, her vizier Arliyan decided it was enough. The House of Emerald had to stand with Amethyst to defeat Dark Opal, so it was in the best interest of the realm, and all of Gemworld, if she was removed from power. He poisoned her drink, and she died.

Because of the enchantment placed on her years earlier, she existed in a state between life and death. The demonic creature intercepted her spirit and gave her a way out: she could reconstitute herself if she drained the magic of Gemworld. With Dark Opal defeated, she saw her chance. She incited a rebellion in the Aquamarine Archipelago, which succeeded in killing Lord Aquamarine. She also enthralled Prince Topaz in an effort to kill Lady Turquoise, but he proved stronger than her spell. She also used Sardonyx to sabotage the investiture of her middle daughter as the new Lady Emerald.

She was eventually defeated by Amethyst and her middle daughter. She finally saw that Gemworld had to survive, and chose to accept her death. Together with Citrina, she gave up her life.

Weaknesses

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
