The "Laughing Man" is a white-faced, murderous prototype cyborg, built by Lutor from the bodies of Dr. Arkham's patients in pursuit of the perfect union of man and machine. The Laughing Man was the main attraction of Dr. Arkham's "psychomantic" seances, which he used to supposedly see the past and the future. He was used by Arkham to kill Eschevin Gord-son, who tried to close Arkham down, and Attorney Dirk Gray-son, who came too close to learning of Arkham's involvement in the former's murder.

The Laughing Man was then sent to kill Barbara Gord-son, who was also investigating her father and Gray-son's deaths, only to be stopped and killed by the Nosferatu.
