History

Mademoiselle Marie (abbreviated as Mlle. Marie) was a young Parisian woman, the daughter of a scientist, who joined the French Resistance during World War II. Throughout the course of the war, she performed many heroic deeds on behalf of Europe and frequently teamed up with the American military commander Sgt. Rock, with whom she shared a romantic relationship. She also occasionally teamed up with Jeb Stuart and his Haunted Tank, and on one mission Stuart helped Marie's father escape to the Allied lines.

However, it has recently been revealed that Mlle. Marie is, in actuality, a code name given to various French women over the centuries, dating back to at least the French Revolution, and there were at least four Maries over the course of World War II. The name is passed on as a legacy from woman to woman, all willing to fight and kill the enemies of France, giving up their lives in doing so, if necessary.

After World War II, Mlle. Marie became a title awarded to the top female operative in the French intelligence agency, the DGSE. The current holder of the name, Josephine Tautin, is the Black Queen's Knight in the Checkmate organization. She was handed the Mlle. Marie mantle in 1998 by Sabine Roth, who had held the name since 1944, after Nazis executed Anais Guillot.

Known Mademoiselle Maries

  • Lady Elisabeth Saint-Marie who protected the nobility during the French Revolution.
  • Countess Margaux de Mortain (circa 1830) guarded the life of Louis-Phillipe during the July Revolution and saved his life at the expense of her own, killed while saving the new King and General Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de La Fayette at the Hôtel de Ville, Paris, on July 31, 1830.
  • Marie Salomon (circa 1916) was an actress and model who defended the Sacred Road during the Battle of Verdun.
  • Zoe Magnier (circa November, 1940) was a mother of two who was part of the forces of General Charles de Gaulle during the Battle of Gabon.
  • Simone Michel-Levy (circa late 1940) was a member of the Brotherhood of Notre Dame during the early stages of World War II. She was crucial to the French victory at Bruneval. At one point, she encountered the Unknown Soldier while he posed as a German officer.
  • Anais Guillot is the name of the most well known World War II-era Mlle. Marie, and most of Marie's appearances during that era can be attributed to Guillot. She undertook missions for the French Resistance and had a romantic relationship with Sgt. Rock of Easy Company. She was also one of the French Maquis who fought Germans at the Vercors Plateau. She was captured by Nazi forces and executed at Fontevraud Abbey on October 7, 1944 while attempting to assassinate Colonel Burkel.
  • Sabine Roth (circa 1944 until the end of World War II) was just a schoolgirl when she took over the position of Mlle. Marie following the execution of Anais Guillot at Fontevraud. She was responsible for completing Guillot's final mission by assassinating the Nazi Colonel Burkel, the Butcher of Fontevraud.
  • Josephine Tautin (circa 1998 to present), DGSE officer, currently serving in Checkmate as the Black Queen's Knight.

Notes

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
  • It is possible that an Earth-Two counterpart to Mlle. Marie may have also existed. The character was introduced in a title that also featured characters who have since been allocated to Earth-Two continuity.
  • Mlle. Marie (Anais Guillot) was single during all of her published events.
  • There is one important detail that distinguishes the New Earth Mlle. Marie from her Earth-One counterpart. At some point during the war, the Earth-One Marie had an affair with a British officer operating in France named Alfred Pennyworth. Their dalliance left Marie with child whom she named Julia. After the war, Julia was raised by a surrogate father named Remarque. It was not until Julia was an adult that she came to the United States and found her actual birth father. In order to maintain Alfred's steady age in Post-Crisis continuity, his affair with Mlle. Marie and the subsequent birth of his daughter are no longer considered part of canon continuity.
