Synopsis for "Trackdown"

Mark spars with his sensei when he is distracted by a camera. Reporter Howard Baxter-Foote appears and begins an introduction to a Manhunter special but Mark swipes the microphone. Mark showers and meets Howard outside where he reiterates what he told him that morning, namely that his job is dangerous and he doesn't want Howard tagging along. Mark goes to the Police Department to gather information on outstanding warrants. He whittles the choices down to three: Cat-Man, Mirage and the duo Cannon and Saber. He meets Mark Felps, the newest Warrent Officer, who is eager to meet Manhunter as he sees his bounty hunting as a tremendous help to the police department. Mark asks after Sylvia Kandrey but Felps doesn't know of her. Mark goes to Eliot Shaw's offices and calls Belle Reve to speak with Flo Crawley about the three bounty choices. Flo believes Cannon and Saber are dead and provides minimal information on the other two; however, she gives Mark information to contact Oracle instead of Flo (due to her fear that Amanda Waller would not approve). Mark contacts Oracle who is only too eager to help. Mark returns to his apartment and speaks with Sister Sassie who gives him information on Mirage. Mark opens a package from Southern Cross Salvage Corporation in which is a crystal kangaroo and a note that his new gadgets will be ready in two weeks. Mark then makes one final call, an appointment for tomorrow morning.

At 10:30 a.m. Mark meets with Ray Guravich at the Daily Star offices. Ray used to cover courtroom news where he met Mark Shaw numerous times. Ray grants Mark access to the newspaper files and Mark researches Mirage and Cat-Man. Mark then goes to the County Municipal Traffic Court and Records for more research and he asks about Sylvia Kandrey but gets nowhere. Back at his apartment Mark dons a tuxedo for his evening engagement but decides to bring the mask and baton. He picks up Eleanor and takes her to the County Museum where a function is being held. In the parking lot he sees a car with license plate "GATO-1" so he makes a quick phone call. Inside was the star attraction, a 4,000-year-old statue of Bast, Egyptian cat goddess which is very shortly snatched by Cat-Man. Mark dons his mask and intervenes. After a brutal fight, with Mark serious injured, Cat-Man heads outside empty-handed to find his car being impounded. Mark had recognized Cat-Man's vanity plate and knew there were outstanding parking tickets so he called the police on it. Manhunter is able to knock Cat-Man out in the parking lot. Eleanor then takes Mark for emergency stitches. The next day Mark is again meeting with his sensei when Sylvia Kandrey arrives. Mark apologizes for getting her in trouble and the two agree to talk.

Trivia

  • Mark Felps mentions that the word just came through that the Thinker and Mr. 104 are dead. Their deaths occurred in the Doom Patrol and Suicide Squad Special. Psi and Weasel also died in that special. It is interesting to note that this event occurred 14 "real world" months prior to this issue's release and before the Manhunter series began (though after Mark Shaw's release from Belle Reve).
